Alberta Disadvantage?
Thirty years ago, on Oct. 22, 1979, Alberta's first ethylene plant was officially opened at Joffre. It was the start of the ambitious Alberta Petrochemical Project-a joint effort by the Alberta Gas Ethylene Company, NOVA Corporation, Dome Petroleum, and Dow Chemical aimed at taking advantage of the province's vast gas reserves, gathering system and pipeline infrastructure to grow a nascent Alberta industry: petrochemicals. Five years later, Joffre sported a second ethylene plant, along with a brand new polyethylene plant. The Alberta Advantage was ramping up.
