HALIFAX _ Gas prices in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia shot up suddenly overnight, following an unwelcome trend seen across Canada this week.

Pump prices in both Maritime provinces jumped by about 12 cents a litre for regular self-serve, while prices in other parts of the country increased for the second time in just 24 hours.

Some blame the hike on hurricane Ike´s impact on Texas refineries, while others claim it´s price gouging on the part of big oil companies.

In Halifax, some drivers are shelling out about $1.44 a litre, while a number of gas stations in Moncton, N.B., are asking $1.39.

While gas prices are regulated in both provinces, so-called interrupter clauses can be used to raise or lower prices earlier if there´s a major shift in the world market.

Meanwhile, regulators in Prince Edward Island are scheduled to adjust the price of gas on Monday, while consumer advocates in Newfoundland and Labrador are warning drivers to fill up their tanks now before prices jump in that province, as well.
