FREDERICTON _ New Brunswick´s Conservative Opposition has presented the provincial government with petitions signed by more than 5,000 people who are opposed to the sale of NB Power.

Tory Leader David Alward says some of the petitions say no to the sale, while others call on the Liberal government to hold a referendum or wait for the next election before finalizing the deal.

The petitions have been tabled in the legislature and Alward says more petitions are coming.

Energy Minister Jack Keir says he´s not upset with the petitions because it is democracy at work.

He says there are still a lot of people who don´t understand the benefits of the deal and he´s working to get the details out.

Under the deal, Hydro-Quebec would buy the major assets of NB Power for almost $4.8 billion and provide more than $5 billion in rate cuts over five years.
