Fire forces coal fired power plant in New Brunswick to close early (NB-Coal-Plant)

MINTO, N.B. _ NB Power is closing its Grand Lake generating station earlier than expected because of a fire.
The coal-fired plant was expected to close in June when its licence expires, but a fire last week in a boiler means the facility will close immediately.
The utility says it would not be economically feasible to repair the boiler just to keep it running until June.
Constructed in 1931, the Grand Lake generating station was built near the Minto coalfields to provide power to Fredericton and the cotton mill in Marysville.
The Grand Lake station is the only customer for NB Coal, so the mining operations will also cease.
A total of 95 jobs will be lost, although the 38 workers at the power station will be offered other positions at the utility.
